Axeman spared jail after gardening claim

A MAN has been spared jail after a court accepted his claim that the axe he was carrying was to be used for gardening.

At Wigan Magistrates̢۪ Court Denis Conway, aged 53, of Parkfield Avenue, Farnworth, pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article in Market Street, Farnworth, on October 1.

Conway was sentenced to 146 days in prison, suspended for 12 months after magistrates heard how he has stayed out of trouble for 21 years and he did not use the axe to threaten anyone or behave aggressively.

He was ordered to pay a total of £213 in costs and charges.
